Preparing the pond for catfish farming

Catfish can live in many kinds of the pond. People usually farm it in soil pond, tarpaulin pond, or cement pond. It even can live well in a small tank in your home if you want to farm it for your daily consumption. However, you do not need to build new pond because using old pond is also ok.

After selecting the pond, you must clean it and fill it with water. The ideal water depth is 4—5 feet. In this depth, the sunlight could still reach until the bottom of the pond, which is very good for the catfish health and the growth of the microorganism in the pond.

The next step is applying fertilizer to the pond. You need around 10—15 kg fertilizer for a pond size 5x2 m. Do not spread it, you can insert it in the sack and simply put it in the water. Leave the pond for about 5—7 days.

Selecting good minnow

You can get the minnow or catfish seeds in the nurseries. Good minnow for the farming sized 5—7 cm. Make sure to select seeds that have the same size. Moreover, you also need to check that the fingerlings are free from any disease and are active.

Spreading and feeding the catfish

Spread the seeds in the morning or evening to avoid the hot sunlight. You do not need to change the water until the harvesting time. But, you can add more water when it is needed. The next step is feeding the fingerlings. You can feed the catfish with pellets, planktons, and worms. Feed them regularly 5—6 times a day. The amount of the food given depends on the size of the catfish.

Harvesting the catfish

After farming the catfish for 2—3 months, you can start to harvest them. The easy way to harvest the catfish is by drying the pond first. Then, take the fish using a smooth container to prevent the fish getting hurt when you collect them.
