Analysis of Giant Prawn Cultivation

Obtain a better result in harvesting the giant prawns by conducting the analysis of giant prawn cultivation.

The keys for cultivating giant prawn culture depend on the careful selections of the culture site, seed supply, feeds, the harvest technique, as well as handling and processing. If you manage those keys well, you will receive a great result when the harvest time comes. Why do those keys play an important role in cultivating giant? Find out the answers by reading the analysis of giant prawn cultivation.

Culture Site

The first thing you need to consider when farming giant prawns is the culture site. The right culture site is essential in determining the water intake, the shape of the ponds, aeration, access roads, and tunnel discharge.

If you prefer a pond to be an aquaculture site, you need to choose the size and the area of the pond. The area of the pond should be high enough to avoid erosion and flooding. There is no exact size of the prawn pond. You can choose the length of the pond based on the topography of the site. However, it is recommended to standardize the width of ponds to ease you in harvesting. So, you may consider having a giant prawn pond with a size range between 0.2 ha and 1.6 ha and a width of about 30m.

Seed Supply

When it comes to the success of the analysis of giant cultivation, you need to think of seed supply. The utilization of seed supply is important if you want to have them for the hatchery. You can obtain female broodstock from fisheries or grow-out ponds.

The ratio for males and females in the broodstock system is 1 to 2 Blue claw males (BC) males or 2 to 3 Orange claw (OC) males per 20 females. The purpose of applying this ratio is to fasten copulation as the fertilization occurs externally within a few hours. When the copulation proceeds, the eggs will remain in the female body for about 3 weeks. Free-swimming larvae will come after hatching and turn into post-larvae and juveniles.

Feeds

The success of giant prawn cultivation also depends on high-quality diets given. Different larval stages will receive a wide variety of live foods. As the early larva stage can only digest live feeds, you can feed the larvae of the giant prawns on some diets like zooplankton, oligochaete, moss, insect larvae, phytoplankton, and crustacean. Those live foods contain exogenous enzymes that are highly digestible.

The larvae tend to be more active and omnivorous at night. You can feed them with artificial diets, like brine shrimp. This kind of feed can be another substitute or supplement for the larvae, post-larvae, and juveniles of the giant prawns. Therefore, the giant prawns must receive proper nutrients, proteins, and vitamins from the diets for the sake of growth.

The Harvest Technique

Another analysis of giant prawn cultivation goes to the harvest technique. The harvest time is mostly about a month of the culture. You can start harvesting by using a seine net. After collecting the harvested giant prawns, you need to select the prawns for sale carefully. Put the smaller ones in the grow-out ponds.

Handling and Processing

After harvesting, you need to handle and process the giant prawns carefully to make sure the quality of the prawns. So, make sure you lift the prawns carefully without being crushed and put the giant prawns in a mixture of water and ice at 0 °C if you couldn’t sell them live.

If you want to sell them live, transport the giant prawns in aerated water about 20 to 22 degrees Celsius. Bear in mind that if you plan to sell the prawns fresh, keep them on ice for not more than three days.

In conclusion, to cultivate the giant prawns, you need to analyze the key points carefully. The analysis of giant prawns cultivation will help you to conduct the aquaculture well. Good luck!
