Analysis of Catfish Enlargement Aquaculture Business in Tarpaulin Ponds

Description: Avoid the pitfalls in catfish farming and get a thorough analysis of the business in the following article.

Catfish is popular as it is considered easy to farm. It can survive in even less favorable condition with high stocking density. Furthermore, cultivating catfish is not necessarily done in an earthen pool.

When space is not available, tarpaulin pond is an option many people take to farm catfish. This article attempts to provide an analysis of catfish enlargement aquaculture business in tarpaulin ponds.

Enlargement Method in Tarpaulin Ponds
Tarpaulin ponds easily become alternatives of earthen ponds to raise catfish for several reasons; efficient, easy to clean and can accommodate a lot of fish. To build a tarpaulin pond, you need some shaded space and tarpaulin.

Shaded space is needed to protect the fish from direct sunlight and rain. The heat from the sun can result in a drastic temperature difference between day and night that can harm fish health. Moreover, rain can also alter the pH water in the pond. If shades are not available, spawning mop will do the job.

Catfish Seeds
The catfish seeds should be of good quality. Among which are active, black and shiny and of 4-7 cm long. Before plunging the seeds into the pond, the seeds must adjust with the pond’s temperature. It can be done by dipping the plastic that contains the seeds into the water pond for about 10-15 minutes. Afterwards, let the fish enter the pond by themselves.

Catfish Feeding
Catfish should be fed two times a day with pellets around 4% of their biomass. Biomass is the total weight of organisms in a given area. In this case, if you put 1000 seeds of catfish with each seed weighs around 1.9 gr, then the biomass is 1.9 x 1000 = 1900 gr = 1.9 kg. This means 4% of 1.9 kg equals to 760 gr.

Pond Treatment
It is encouraged to substitute or add the water in the pond. For the first two months, once a month is enough, while in the third month, water should be substituted twice a month. Bigger fish means more wastes and less oxygen in the water.

Profit Simulation
Catfish is ready for harvest after 2.5 months. Below is the profit simulation:

Variables : Seeds
Quantity : 1.000
Unit Price : 150
Total : 150.000

Variables : Pellets
Quantity  : 90 kg
Unit Price : 10.000 / kg
Total : 900.000

Variables : Electricity
Quantity : -
Unit Price : 30.000
Total : 30.000

Variables : Water
Quantity : 19,2
Unit Price : 5.000 / m2
Total : 96.000

Variables :  Meds and Vitamin
Quantity : -
Unit Price : 50.000
Total : 50.000

Total : 1.226.000

Let’s say that the dead fish rate is 20%, meaning there are still 800 fish to harvest. If each kilogram consists of 8 fish and is priced for 18,000, then the profit calculation is the following:

100 kg x Rp18,000/kg = Rp1,800,000

Rp1,800,000 – Rp1,226,000 = Rp574,000

For a one-time harvest, a catfish farmer can earn net profit for as much as Rp574,000.

That is the analysis of catfish enlargement aquaculture business in tarpaulin ponds. We wish you great success in your farming.
