Caring for Corydoras Catfish in an Aquarium

Corydoras are peaceful, small bottom-dwelling catfish ideal for community tanks. To keep them healthy and happy, follow these guidelines.

Tank setup

Tank size: Minimum 10–20 gallons for a small group; larger tanks for mixed species.

Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to protect their barbels. Sharp substrate causes injury.

Hiding places: Provide caves, driftwood, and plants (live or artificial) for cover and resting spots.

Water parameters: Temperature 72–79°F (22–26°C), pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Maintain stable conditions.

Filtration: Gentle but effective filtration to keep water clean without strong currents; Corydoras prefer calm flow.

Social needs

Schooling fish: Keep in groups of at least 4–6 individuals; more is better to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.

Feeding

Diet: Omnivorous. Offer sinking pellets, wafers, frozen foods (bloodworms, daphnia), and blanched vegetables.

Feeding frequency: Once or twice daily, adjusting amount so food is consumed within a few minutes. Remove uneaten food to prevent water fouling.

Maintenance

Water changes: 25–50% weekly, depending on bioload. Regularly test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

Monitor barbels: Check for signs of damage or infection, often caused by poor substrate or water quality.

Health signs: Active foraging, smooth breathing, clear eyes indicate good health. Lethargy, gasping, or visible lesions require prompt attention.

Breeding (brief)

Spawning often triggered by cooler, slightly acidic water and increased feeding. Provide flat surfaces or broad-leaf plants for egg-laying. Remove adults if you want to protect eggs.

Common species

Corydoras paleatus, C. aeneus, and C. julii are popular and hardy choices for beginners.

With proper tankmates, clean water, and a soft substrate, Corydoras thrive and add lively bottom activity to a community aquarium.
